Abstract: Monitoring the fluid status of patients with kidney disease remains an important aspect of hemodialysis. In more detail, changes in fluid volume in the plasma and interstitial spaces are dependent on ultrafiltration from the vascular space and vascular refilling by capillary and lymph flow; and the rates at which these processes occur are influenced not only by pressure gradients but also by the properties of the semipermeable capillary wall. We consider a two-compartment mathematical model which by means of ODEs describes the dynamics of fluid status during the initial stage of hemodialysis. Changes on the capillary wall properties accounting for the effects of inflammation are also examined. [hide abstract]
